Atreus42 FT, ergonomics without splitting the keyboard in two
Not everyone wants two separate halves connected by a cable sitting on their desk. The Atreus is the answer for people who want an ergonomic layout but prefer one keyboard they can simply pick up and move.
It is the cheapest way into a column-staggered layout that I offer, and the lightest keyboard I make. It fits in the side pocket of a backpack.
My name is Jan Falba. Since 2014 I have built every keyboard here myself, and yours gets built once you order it.
Who the Atreus42 is for
- You want to try a column-staggered layout without a large outlay to begin with.
- You work in several places and pack your keyboard into a bag every day.
- You do not have much desk space.
- A split keyboard feels like too much, but a regular one is no longer enough.
One case, two zones
The Atreus uses a column-staggered ergonomic layout with slightly angled zones for each hand, milled from a single piece. Your wrists sit more naturally than on a regular keyboard, though you cannot spread them as wide as on a split build. That is a deliberate trade-off: less ergonomics than a split, but no cable between halves and nothing to set up on the desk.
Forty-two keys mean working with layers. Hold a layer key with your thumb and the same keys become numbers, symbols or arrows. The first few days can be frustrating. Your speed returns with practice.

The Atreus is a one-piece board, so the wireless version needs only one controller and one battery. That is why it costs less to go wireless here than on a split keyboard.
Remap it without compiling firmware
Keys, layers and the main layout functions are changed directly in the VIAL app or ZMK Studio, depending on the version you choose. Connect the keyboard, edit the layout and save it. The new configuration works immediately.
On a 42 key board this matters more than usual, because you will keep refining your own layer layout over the first few weeks.
Switches you change without soldering
Hot swap sockets mean switches push in by hand and come out with a simple switch puller, no soldering iron. Eight Cherry MX options. I source them directly from Germany and use genuine Cherry MX switches.
Wood, not moulded plastic
I mill the case from bamboo or acacia on my own CNC and hand-finish it with two coats of a lacquer also intended for finishing wooden toys. On a keyboard this small the grain stands out, because the whole case is a single piece of wood. A PETG version is available too, in black or white.
One person builds it. The same person repairs it
I mill, solder, sand, finish, test and pack every keyboard myself. I repair every keyboard I have ever built. You pay for parts and shipping, the work itself is on me.
Frequently asked questions
Are 42 keys enough? Yes, thanks to layers, but it takes some learning. If you want a number row under your fingers straight away, look at the Atreus62 FT.
Is this a split keyboard? No. It is one case with angled zones for each hand. If you are looking for two separate halves, see the Corne FT or ReDOX FT.
Do I need to know how to code? No. You edit the layout visually in the VIAL app or ZMK Studio.
How long does it take to make? The standard lead time is around 15 working days.
